Plastic Bottle Toilet Project

March 6 - November 19

The Plastic Bottle Toilet Project is one of BlueGreen Initiative for Sustainable Development Network’s (BlueGreenISDN) most innovative and impactful interventions, addressing both environmental pollution and sanitation challenges in rural and underserved communities.

Across many parts of Nigeria, poor sanitation and open defecation remain critical issues, posing threats to public health, water quality, and human dignity. At the same time, plastic waste continues to clog drainages, litter streets, and pollute the environment. The Plastic Bottle Toilet Project creatively tackles both challenges by transforming used plastic bottles into eco-friendly, low-cost toilet facilities.

These toilets are constructed using thousands of discarded plastic bottles filled with sand and arranged as durable building blocks. The approach is cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and promotes circular economy principles, reducing waste while improving sanitation infrastructure.
