Akwa Ibom Gets First Bottle Toilet as BluegreenISDN Promotes Eco-Innovation

The Bluegreen Initiative for Sustainable Development Network (BluegreenISDN) has commissioned and handed over Akwa Ibom State’s first Bottle Toilet facility at Community Secondary School, Nkek, in Ukanafun Local Government Area.

The eco-innovation project converted more than 18,000 recycled plastic bottles from different consumer brands into a functional sanitation facility for the school.

The facility was officially commissioned by a representative of the Canadian Embassy, Ms Maude Olivier, Programme Manager of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (CFLI).

Her participation highlighted the partnership between BluegreenISDN, the International Climate Change Development Initiative (ICCDI), and CFLI, which supported the project.

At the event, BluegreenISDN expressed appreciation to CFLI and ICCDI for providing the technical and financial support that enabled the project’s implementation.

The Bottle Toilet was designed to address waste management by removing thousands of plastic bottles from the environment and reusing them productively.

It also improves sanitation by providing a clean and safe toilet facility, thereby helping to reduce open defecation within the school community.

In addition, the project supports education by offering a secure and girl-friendly restroom that helps keep young girls in school.

The handover ceremony attracted government officials and community leaders from across Ukanafun Local Government Area.
