Local Youth Empowered as Guardians of Tradition and Nature in Eastern Obolo

CSDevNet

In a vibrant blend of cultural heritage and environmental stewardship, the Bluegreen Initiative for Sustainable Development Network (BluegreenISDN), in partnership with the Climate and Sustainable Development Network of Nigeria (CSDevNet), celebrated World Wetlands Day 2026 in the Emere-oke Kingdom, Eastern Obolo LGA.
The event, themed “Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage,” focused on bridging the gap between ancestral wisdom and modern conservation techniques.

Honoring the Past to Protect the Future
The 2026 celebration marked a strategic shift from awareness to active integration. Following last year’s successful program, which introduced alternative livelihoods to reduce over-exploitation of the wetlands, this year’s initiative, bolstered by the support of CSDevNet, focused on the youth as the primary custodians of the ecosystem.
Through intensive training sessions, the BluegreenISDN team demonstrated how traditional local knowledge can be refined and enhanced to better preserve the fragile wetland ecosystem. By validating the community’s historical connection to the land, the partnership aims to foster a sense of pride and responsibility in the younger generation.

From Conservation to Commerce: The Beehive Initiative
Moving beyond dialogue, the collaboration delivered a tangible boost to the local economy by donating beehives to the Emere-oke community. This venture serves a dual purpose:
Ecological: Enhancing pollination within the wetland flora.
Economic: Providing a steady stream of income independent of fishing.
The hives will be managed directly by the local youth, with BluegreenISDN providing ongoing technical supervision to ensure the project’s sustainability.
”Our goal is to ensure that the people of Emere-oke are not just observers of conservation, but active participants who benefit from it,” a representative from BluegreenISDN stated, acknowledging the vital support from CSDevNet in making the project a reality.

Empowering Women and Fisher Folks
The impact of this project extends to the heart of the kingdom’s workforce. All proceeds from the honey production venture are earmarked for the economic empowerment of the youth and women of Emere-oke.
As a community of predominantly fisher folks, the residents have historically relied almost entirely on the wetlands. This new venture provides a critical financial cushion, reducing the pressure on aquatic resources while elevating the standard of living for those most dependent on the ecosystem.
