From Bottles to Bricks: BlueGreenISDN Launches Eco-Toilet Project in Ukanafun

A remarkable step towards environmental sustainability and community development was taken today as the BlueGreen Initiative for Sustainable Development Network (BlueGreenISDN) officially laid the foundation for the innovative Bottle Toilet Project at Community Secondary School, Nkek in Ukanafun Local Government Area.

Led by Executive Director Mr. Ediongsenyene Ndunobong, the BlueGreenISDN team was warmly received by Mr. Uduak Udoidiong and Mr. Sunday Akpan, the school’s compound master. The visit was marked by a significant achievement the students had already collected over 18,000 plastic bottles, highlighting their commitment and understanding of the project’s environmental benefits.

The foundation-laying ceremony, supervised by Architect Obot Monday Obot and Engineer Fabian Dickson, began smoothly with the site fully prepared and workers mobilized. Their expertise ensures a solid and sustainable foundation for the project’s success.

Community leaders, including Chief Uboho Ido and Chief Ìmè Akpaitam, expressed deep appreciation to BlueGreenISDN, calling the project a groundbreaking milestone the first of its kind in the state and perhaps the entire region. They lauded the vision and collaboration it represents, praying for its swift and successful completion.

In his speech, Mr. Ediongsenyene Ndunobong thanked the Nkek community for their openness and support, and acknowledged the efforts of funders, partners, and the hardworking team members. He emphasized that the Bottle Toilet Project is more than infrastructure, it’s a symbol of sustainability, awareness, and transformation.

Also sharing their excitement were Mr. Ubong Matthew, the Community Project Manager, who praised the use of recycled materials for hygiene solutions, and Okim MfrekeAbasi, Communication Lead for BlueGreenISDN, who highlighted the impact this facility will have on girls’ health and sanitation in the school.

This project is a beacon of hope and innovation showcasing how waste can be transformed into valuable community infrastructure while promoting hygiene and environmental responsibility.
